Hello 2018

New year, new things, new opportunities!  I love starting a new year off right.

I'm not one to make a bunch of goals because I know myself too well - I'll just say 'fuck it' a few weeks later and feel guilty. Instead, I'm going to make some changes:

This is the year of acceptance All 2017, I fought hard against menopause - acupuncture, herbs, eating 'estrogen-boosting foods' (I'm still skeptical about this), diligently tracking my period, supplements.... and then getting angry when my period/cycle was wonky or I felt PMS symptoms when I wasn't even supposed to be feeling them.  It's draining being angry every month so this year I'll just accept it for what it is - that I'm in the stages of perimenopause and just go with it. I'll still do the above to reduce whatever perimenopause symptoms lob at me but good-bye anger.  Ain't nobody got time for that.

This is the year of dedication.  Lifting use to be my jam.  From 2012 to 2014, weight lifting was my primary workout and I loved it. I loved going up in weight and doing crazy weighted circuits.  Then I found Muay Thai and that changed my life- I dropped lifting completely and spent 6 days a week at my Muay Thai gym.....but then I started getting injured and I'm 99.9% certain it's because I stopped weight lifting which led to muscular/strength imbalance.

This year I'm going to balance out my workouts and dedicate more time to strength training so I'll be dedicating 2-3 days to weight lifting.  I'm also going to dedicate more time to stretching which is something I never really gave much time to do but must because old.

This is the year of Benjamin Button.  As in I'm going to Benjamin Button the fuck out of my face.  While I'm prepared to accept menopause, I will not accept looking like old hag Melisandre when she takes off her magical necklace.  I mentioned in my previous post about incorporating actives into my skin routine and so far, so good.  My skin is really liking The Ordinary brand (no adverse reactions, my skin feels hydrated etc) and best of all, my wallet loves it too.

I'm also going to up my facial game and add LED treatments to my monthly facials.  The combination of red and blue light is supposed to boost collagen production, smooth the skin, reduce dryness, correct hyperpigmentation and a bunch of other things.  It's non-invasive, gentle and fantastic for sensitive skin.  I had my first treatment (complimentary, ftw!) a couple of weeks ago and my skin felt super smooth and looked so bright the next morning.

And things that will remain status quo:  Treat yoself, happiness is #1, no toxic bitches up in hurr.

What are some things you're looking to change in 2018?

  1. You might be entering perimenopause, but you look like you're in your twenties sooooo I think you still come out on top! I still need to check out that face brand and keep myself from looking like an old hag too. Yay for lifting!! Totally needing to add it back to my life as well. Cheers to the best 2018!

  2. What Nadine said. You look amazing! I'm really trying to work on balance this year instead of being all one thing & nothing of the rest.

  3. I'm staring perimenopause in the face. I accept that it's coming but I won't give in without a fight. I keep promising myself that I'll start doing anything other than running and never do ... maybe 2018 will be my year to start cross-training. Lifting? Yoga? Kickboxing? I'm open for any of it. Happy New Year!

  7. Skincare is one of my priorities this year. Along with doing something with my hair. To much is falling out and it's very slow to regrow back. I thought it was due to poor diet and depression but I'm doing much better there and haven't seen an improvement. GRRRR ... I am thrilled that you are loving Ordinary because I am very interested in it because I love the price points too. Would love to hear your recommendations in a future post. I never used to stretch either but I'm realizing old coots need to do it.

  12. I need to spend some serious time on skin love. I've FINALLY started lotioning up when I exit the shower. I have a face routine, but I'm not religious about it and I'm sure there are better things out there for me. I've always had acne issues but I don't want discoloration and stuff to be a thing, too, as I get older!

  14. I am busy slathering myself in sunscreen over here because nooooo wrinkles. Those LED treatments sound great, I'm thinking the time is going to come fairly soon where I need to start investing that kind of thing. The climate here is pretty unforgiving!

  15. You do look very young for your age, so just take that and enjoy it while you're going through all of this :)

Acceptance is a ridiculously powerful life strategy.
