Homemade Pizza - easier to make than you think.

Not going to lie, I love pizza.  Even though I don't eat grains, I'll make two exceptions: pizza and cake.  I don't care what you say - no matter what you try, no matter how much of an awesome chef/cook/baker you are, pizza and cake do not taste the same when using grain-free flour (believe me, I've tried).  These two things just need good ol' white flour to taste delicious #yeahisaidit.

I make this every Friday for Pizza Fridays....it's our only 'cheat day' where we loosen the reigns on healthy eating, kick back with pizza and cider/beer (me/husband) or juice (Kayla).  Needless to say, this is our favourite night.  If it weren't so easy to make, it would likely be a monthly thing because for real, who has time for bread dough to rise? the answer is no one.  Thanks to active dry yeast, it only takes me 15 minutes from start to finish to make the crust....this is the easiest homemade pizza you'll ever make.

Ingredients (for dough):

  • 1.5 tsp active dry yeast. I use and love this one.
  • 1 tsp white sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2.5 cups white flour
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt

  1. Preheat oven 450F
  2. In a medium bowl, dissolve sugar and yeast in the warm water.  Cover with a tea towel and let stand until creamy (10mins).
  3. Stir in flour and salt; mix until flour begins to absorb the liquid, then add the oil.  Knead the dough by hand.  Cover with tea towel and let rest for 5 minutes.
  4. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and roll to flatten.  
  5. Place dough onto a lightly floured round or square pizza pan**
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until bottom is golden brown.
Toppings I use:
  • fresh chopped mushrooms
  • chopped sundried tomatoes
  • pineapple pieces if we have any lying around
  • fresh sliced pepperoni from the deli counter
  • freshly grated mozzarella cheese (not the pre-bagged cheese; did you know they add some kind of drying agent (chemical) to these products?!).  
  • this pizza sauce:

** Sometimes we use cookie cutters to cut the dough into fun shapes; other times I'll use 1/4 of the dough to make a Kayla's own personal size pizza if she wants this.

  8. I really just need to suck it up and try it. Everyone says it's not very hard but the minute I see 'roll on a floured surface' I bounce. I know that's not difficult but the mess! It makes me nervous.

  10. I love pizza! I used to make homemade pizza dough too but then I got lazy. My grocery store's deli has homemade pizza dough you can buy cheaply. And did I mention that I was lazy? I have never seen that pizza sauce before. I'll have to try and see if they have it here. And yes, all pre-shredded cheese has the drying agent. It keeps the cheese from sticking together, which is why preshredded cheese also gets gritty in some sauces. I am lazy so sometimes I use preshredded cheese but if it's for sauce, I grate it myself.

  16. No matter how healthy I ever am or try to be, pizza will never be cut out of my diet. I love pizza. I tried once to make homemade pizza and it must have been the store-bought pizza crust, but oh my gosh I was so bloated and gassy. It was embarrassing! I will have to try this recipe though!
