The Song of Achilles 5/5.  I love it when, on a whim, I get a book and it blows me away....this book did exactly that.

I've been told that it's a slightly different take of Homer's classic, The Iliad (I wouldn't know since I could never make it through any of those smarty pants classic books) but this story just reeled me in from page 1.  I'm fascinated with Greek mythology and this is the amazing story of the tragic soldier, Achilles, his destiny for greatness.  I took this book with me everywhere and read every chance I could. GET ON THIS ASAP.

A Darkness Absolute 4/5.  Another non-researched book that surprised me.  Saw this on the Boomerang shelf at my library and picked it up because I enjoy a good "who dunnit" book and this did not disappoint.

Beartown 5/5.  Oh, Frederik Backman, I do love (most) of your books and this one certainly surpasses A Man Called Ove (which I loved).  The lives of all the characters, how they fit into one another and a tragic event that changes the town kept me turning the pages well into the night.

American Assassin 5/5.  I love me a amazing, fast-paced, action-packed spy book and this one is right up there.  A gifted college athlete suffers a devastating loss at the hands of terrorists and, fueled by vengeance, gives himself to the American government with the understanding that he will become a trained killer and seek revenge on the terrorists that took his loved ones.

Did Not Finish

Behind Closed Doors.  Mostly because I just ran out of time to read this and when I skimmed through some of the chapters, it didn't pique my interest so back it went.

The Leavers.  I really did try to read (and like) this book since it got such rave reviews but the story delved too much into the boring parts of Daniel's life and not enough into his past or why the people he loved left him.

Lab Girl.  I actually forgot I put this on hold at the library (and not sure why I did in the first place) so when it came in, I thought I'd give it a go...only to ditch it at the end of the first chapter because this book is boring AF.

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand.  I thought I would like this since it involves a retired, somewhat curmudgeonly old man (I relate to those characters so much) but instead of delving into his new budding relationship with Mrs. Ali, the little widow shopkeeper, it went on and on about other boring subplots that were dry and boring and made me skip more and more pages so back it went.

  1. I saw Beartown in my local used bookstore and was intrigued. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED A Man Called Ove. I didn't really care for My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry. Hearing your thoughts on Beartown gives me hope!

  2. I'm so bummed to hear The Leavers was a DNF, it was my BOTM book last month, but I haven't even picked it up because I'm stuck working my way through endless library books. It's the best when you randomly pick up a book and it ends up being one you love!

  8. Definitely adding the Achilles book to my TBR. I love Greek mythology. And I did read Iliad eons ago. :D Everyone loves Beartown so I've already added it to my TBR. I read the book prior to A Darkness Absolute and was underwhelmed but now you're telling me book #2 is fantastic. And you're not someone easily impressed. Argh. Now I have to read the damn thing! American Assassin also sounds terrific. So many good books!

  17. Everyone keeps talking about how much they loved Beartown! I've only read one Fredrick Backman book (Britt-Marie) and didn't like it, so I'm a little hesitant to read it, but I think I will eventually. :)

  19. Bear town seems to be making the rounds so I'm going to give it a go. WE LOVE THE VINCE FLYNN series, he is such a badass, seriously, SUCH a good character. So sad the author died a few years ago.

  23. You had me at Greek mythology. I have never heard of The Song of Achilles. You didn't miss a ton in Behind Closed Doors. It was good, a decent thriller. But not an exceptional read for me.
